Grade 12 children

Grade 12 children

In our 2013_4th_Quarter_Newsletter we have a message of thanks from four of our graduating Grade 12 children who are being integrated with their extended families: David Mtonga, Gloria Chisenga, Patrick Mwamba and Gift Machaya.  All the children have expressed their heartfelt thanks for the support offered to them by Makeni Centre through our donors Kloosterkerk, Friends of Makeni, African AIDS Angels, Saanich Church (Victoria), St John the Baptist (Piddington), Little St Mary’s (Cambridge), and other donors who supported them during their stay and education at St Nicholas Children’s Home. All the children hope to pursue further education in various fields.

In  September the children at the orphanage were also very grateful for a delicious surprise meal laid on by Sunset Villas, part of the Hickey Group of Companies, who have long supported the work of the centre.

We hear about Mainza Chinjila, who has been under our Vulnerable Children Education Support Programme since Grade 8 in 2008.

After completing Grade 12, Mainza enrolled in a one-year course in Pre-School Teaching sponsored by The Pearl Foundation (Netherlands), an NGO founded by former volunteers Tieneke and Henri Zwarts. Mainza now hopes to either work in a pre-school or start her own pre-school!

Girls' Brigade

Girls’ Brigade

Grade 12 pupil Gloria Chisenga tells us about the Girls’ Brigade camp at Musamba Basic School in Chilanga and the activities they participated in, including Bible study, sketches, singing, orange juice making and sports.

We also hear about a day of prayers for students facing exams in Grade 7, 9 and 12 (three important years in Zambian schools), including hymns, choruses and motivational talks by members of staff.

Farmers far from water

Finally, we have more serious news of water supply problems at Mwomboshi and Chisamba Settlement Villages. There are too few boreholes to comfortably support the population, which has been growing by seventeen families a year. This has led to some families having to walk for half an hour to reach their nearest borehole through the bush and neighbouring plots. We hope that our donors will consider assisting us with funding for the sinking of further boreholes.

About Makeni Webmaster

I spent most of my youth in Makeni, growing up at the centre as it emerged from the bush, one building at a time. I now work in the UK as a lecturer in computer science.
