Second quarter newsletter

Here is the latest news from Makeni Centre, the second newsletter of 2013.

On May 10, 2013 Makeni Centre presented letters of offer to Mwembeshi Settlers as the first step towards having certificates of title. The occasion was attended by member of parliament Keith Mukata, the Deputy Minister of Finance. In his address to the settlers, Mr Mukata urged the settler farmers to utilize the land efficiently amd thanked the centre for empowering people who could not afford to buy land at astronomical prices

We also give thanks to the Friends of Makeni for their ongonig support and in particular to Tieneke and Henri Zwarts for organizing workshops for teachers. A variety of educational materials and equipment covering pre-school up to Grade 12 have been contributed that will help to improve the school’s educational standards. The teachers also received training in the use of play corners, which are used to promote children’s understanding of their home environment, to help them express their creativity, to practice story reading and telling and to solve problems together.

In March this year we had a special visit by Vera Ootes and Paul Jongeling, who came to offer strategic technical assistance to the institution. This was Vera’s third working visit to MEC and Paul’s second. The dynamic duo had previously visited MEC from December 2011 to January 2012 with their son Geert to upgrade the computer laboratory. On this occasion the team worked on helping the centre to perform a SWOT analysis of its activities and to map out a plan for the future. The centre was honoured to have their assistance.

St Nicholas Children’s Village had a visit from Barclays Bank under their corporate responsibility programme.  The team from Barclays brought donations of blankets, kitchen items, mosquito nets, shoes and food and also shared with the children their inspiring stories about their own childhood, and how they reached their present positions.

In August 2012 Joke Ruiters from the Netherlands visited the orphanage for four weeks, training staff in tailoring and helping staff and children learn how to make shorts, skirts and gym dresses.

The Seventh Day Adventist Makeni Mission District Dorcas Mothers donated items including toiletries, under-garments and cosmetics among others, to St Nicholas Orphanage. Their representative, Mrs Mpikwa, encouraged children to use God’s Words to live better lives morally and spiritually.

We are also very glad to note the progress of Nicholas Tembo, who is now 4 years old. Nicholas arrived at the orphanage as a baby and has now started pre-school at MEC. Although his speech is not fluent, he is getting on well.

Finally we have news of Makeni School’s participation in sector sports events held at Mt Makulu Secondary School, where the team placed second out of eight schools.

Well done Makeni!

First quarter newsletter for 2013

Here is the latest news from Makeni Centre, the first newsletter of 2013.

Congratulations go to the Primary School for achieving a perfect pass rate for Grade 7! We can’t ask for more than that. We attribute these results to the presence of a secure infrastructure, provision of suitable text books and good use of teaching and learning aids. The results will be a testimony and an assurance to parents whose children are in our care that we are determined to provide quality education. We hope that parents wishing to bring their children to MEC will feel encouraged to do so.

In other school news, two of the St Nicholas Village children, Wisdom Kabwe and James Chininga, topped their Grade 12 class. Well done to both of them!

Diji Mwale (Grade 6) and  Violet Mukumbi (Grade 9) represented the school in area writing competitions, with eight schools taking part. Both students achieved very creditable second places.

We continue to receive a steady flow of visitors from government and non-governmental organisations. Recently we have had talks from Mr Trinity Haambokoma of the Anti-Corruption Commission and Mrs Gertrude Shinkanga, the Executive Director for Youth Concern.

In Chibombo district, Mwembeshi Settlement Village was the venue for a celebration of International Women’s Week, which was attended by over 500 people.

Finally, we remember the wedding of Bertha Kabwe, another of our St Nicholas’ girls, to Chewu Syakatayi, who is a public administrator. Bertha, who studied education in Solwezi, now works for the Ministry of Education. Our warm congratulations to the happy couple! The ceremony was performed by Fr Nathan Ngoma at our own Church of the Good Shepherd.

As volunteers see it

Henri and Tieneke Zwarts are volunteers from Holland who have been working at the centre for some months now, helping the school children at MEC with their studies, assisting with educational programs, the orphanage, nursing and church activities. Here they report on some of their recent activities in Mwomboshi Settlement village:

In Mwomboshi Settlement Village we met Carolyn Phiri. Carolyn has a severe physical disability, which has meant that she has been bed-bound for around ten years now. All that time she has been in her hut.

We brought Carolyn into a specialized hospital for investigations and used donations to provide her with a special bed and a house with some special arrangements, so Carolyn is able to go outside again for the first time in 10 years! Besides that we have tried to empower her by making some small investments in knitting needles, crochet needles and wool. We also buy some of her products which we sell on a web shop in The Netherlands.

Pascal Mulenga has been suffering for ten years from a badly fractured arm, which is just hanging on a piece of skin. Pascal’s family is very poor and it is a heavy duty for him to take care of two disabled children. He has been to the hospital before, but was not able to pay for the surgery he needed to straighten his arm. This changed in April. Thanks to donations we were able to bring him to the hospital and after considering surgery, he choose to go for a specially made brace. Now, he is able to raise his arm again straight into the air!

In March 2013 we started Youth Alpha with the 16+ teenagers of the St. Nicholas Orphanage.  The Youth Alpha course is about the basics of Christianity.

Our 2011 Annual Report has been long delayed, but here it is.

When you spend time at MEC you feel there is never a dull moment, and 2011 was no different. In addition to the usual extensive array of educational and health-related projects, agricultural projects, the orphanage, secondary school expansion and other activities, we celebrated our 40th anniversary, attended by Mama Chibesa Kankasa.

The attached report details all of the major activities at the centre over the year, and includes many photos from the anniversary celebrations.
