This is one of those years when the rain has just continued to fall in great quantities.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, I hear, Makeni is being flooded. The drainage ditches along the roads have been poorly maintained.\u00a0 Of course, much of Lusaka along Kafue Road used to be a place where ducks and deer were in abundance, and floods are nothing new to the city.<\/p>\n<p>The general clinic, the ARV clinic, and the toilets for both the school and the clinics were flooded impassably<br \/>\nfor two days, which finally seems to have prompted the council to clear the ditch in front of MEC.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/makeni-flood-thumb-320x226-125-126.html','popup','width=320,height=226,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/makeni-flood-thumb-320x226-125-126.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/makeni-flood-thumb-320x226-125-thumb-320x226-126.jpg\" alt=\"Thumbnail image for makeni-flood.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/span>They put a large earth mover to work on the entrance to the centre. Unfortunately, in the process, they also<br \/>\nremoved the tarmac road at that point and the part of the road that went over the ditch. Cars could not get in or out for a full day, until Fr Mukuyamba<br \/>\nand other staff exhibited that can-do attitude that is born of necessity, and built a new makeshift bridge over the ditch. It did get some water flowing though.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/MECHistory112-128.html','popup','width=640,height=458,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/MECHistory112-128.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/MECHistory112-thumb-320x229-128.jpg\" alt=\"MECHistory112.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"229\" \/><\/a><\/span>The &#8216;dambo&#8217; as we call it &#8211; the acre or so we have always kept undeveloped &#8211;<br \/>\nhas flooded properly and is full of ducks and other unidentified<br \/>\nvisitors.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently some children from the orphanage even took<br \/>\nto the lake in a water storage drum for a while.<\/p>\n<p>I have no current photos, but here are some from the floods in 1978, which give you a good idea of the scene on the ground. 1989 were the next big rains, and there was widespread flooding in Zambia (and all the way down the Zambezi) in 2000.<\/p>\n<div>Here also is an aerial photo from the same period showing the kind of flooding that is affecting the whole area once again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/Slide554-122.html','popup','width=640,height=460,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/Slide554-122.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/blognews\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/Slide554-thumb-320x230-122.jpg\" alt=\"Slide554.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You never know what kind of rains a year will bring &#8211; some years you can&#8217;t get enough, others you get too much.
