{"id":1283,"date":"2014-03-08T21:30:48","date_gmt":"2014-03-08T20:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=1283"},"modified":"2014-03-08T21:31:05","modified_gmt":"2014-03-08T20:31:05","slug":"1283","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/2014\/03\/1283\/","title":{"rendered":"2013 4th Quarter Newsletter"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1286\" style=\"width: 292px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image002-001.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1286\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1286\" alt=\"Grade 12 children\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image002-001.jpg\" width=\"282\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grade 12 children<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In our <a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/2013_4th_Quarter_Newsletter.pdf\">2013_4th_Quarter_Newsletter<\/a>\u00a0we have a message of thanks from four of our graduating Grade 12 children who are being integrated with their extended families:\u00a0David Mtonga, Gloria Chisenga, Patrick Mwamba and Gift Machaya. \u00a0All the children have expressed their heartfelt thanks for the support offered to them by Makeni Centre through our donors\u00a0Kloosterkerk, Friends of Makeni,\u00a0African AIDS Angels, Saanich Church\u00a0(Victoria), St John the Baptist\u00a0(Piddington), Little St Mary\u2019s (Cambridge),\u00a0and other donors who supported them\u00a0during their stay and education at St\u00a0Nicholas Children\u2019s Home. All the children\u00a0hope to pursue further education in various fields.<\/p>\n<p>In \u00a0September the children at the orphanage were also very grateful for a delicious surprise meal laid on by Sunset Villas, part of the Hickey Group of Companies, who have long supported the work of the centre.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">We hear about Mainza\u00a0Chinjila, who has been under our Vulnerable Children Education Support Programme since Grade 8 in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1287\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image003-001.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1287\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1287\" alt=\"Mainza Chinjila\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image003-001.jpg\" width=\"276\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mainza Chinjila in training<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After completing Grade 12, Mainza enrolled in a one-year course in Pre-School Teaching sponsored by The Pearl Foundation (Netherlands), an NGO founded by former volunteers Tieneke and Henri Zwarts. Mainza now hopes to either work in a pre-school or start her own pre-school!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1288\" style=\"width: 298px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image004-001.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1288\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1288\" alt=\"Girls' Brigade\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image004-001.jpg\" width=\"288\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Girls&#8217; Brigade<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Grade 12 pupil Gloria Chisenga tells us about the Girls&#8217; Brigade camp at Musamba Basic School in Chilanga and the activities they participated in, including Bible study,\u00a0sketches, singing, orange juice making and sports.<\/p>\n<p>We also hear about a day of prayers for students facing exams in Grade 7, 9 and 12 (three important years in Zambian schools), including hymns, choruses and motivational talks by members of staff.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1285\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image007-001.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1285\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1285\" alt=\"Farmers far from water\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/image007-001.jpg\" width=\"296\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Farmers far from water<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, we have more serious news of water supply problems at Mwomboshi and Chisamba Settlement Villages. There are too few boreholes to comfortably support the population, which has been growing by seventeen families a year. This has led to some families having to walk for half an hour to reach their nearest borehole through the bush and neighbouring plots.
