{"id":1141,"date":"2013-09-07T14:17:25","date_gmt":"2013-09-07T13:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=1141"},"modified":"2013-09-07T14:18:14","modified_gmt":"2013-09-07T13:18:14","slug":"second-quarter-newsletter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/2013\/09\/second-quarter-newsletter\/","title":{"rendered":"Second quarter newsletter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here is the latest news from Makeni Centre,\u00a0<a title=\"2013 1st quarter newsletter\" href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/MEC-June-2013-Newsletter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the second newsletter of 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On May 10, 2013 Makeni Centre\u00a0presented letters of offer to Mwembeshi Settlers as the first step towards having certificates of title. The occasion was attended by member of parliament Keith Mukata, the Deputy Minister of Finance. In his address to the settlers, Mr Mukata urged the settler farmers to utilize the land efficiently amd thanked the centre for empowering people who could not afford to buy land at astronomical prices<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/teacher-training.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1151\" title=\"teacher training\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/teacher-training-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/teacher-training-300x195.jpg 300w, http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/teacher-training.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We also give thanks to the Friends of Makeni for their ongonig support and in particular to Tieneke and Henri Zwarts\u00a0for organizing workshops for teachers. A\u00a0variety of educational materials and equipment covering pre-school up to Grade 12 have been contributed that will help to improve the school&#8217;s educational standards. The teachers also received training in the use of play corners, which are used to promote children&#8217;s understanding of their home environment, to help them express their creativity, to practice story reading and telling and to solve problems together.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1148\" title=\"School activities\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/school-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/school-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/school.jpg 325w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In March this year we had a special visit by Vera Ootes and Paul Jongeling, who came to offer strategic technical assistance to the institution. This was Vera&#8217;s third working visit to MEC and Paul&#8217;s second. The dynamic duo had previously visited MEC from December 2011 to January 2012 with their son Geert to upgrade the computer laboratory. On this occasion the team worked on helping the centre to perform a SWOT analysis of its activities and to map out a plan for the future. The centre was honoured to have their assistance.<\/p>\n<p>St Nicholas Children\u2019s Village had a visit from Barclays Bank under their corporate responsibility programme. \u00a0The team from Barclays brought donations of blankets, kitchen items, mosquito nets, shoes and food and also shared with the children their inspiring stories about their own childhood, and how they reached their present positions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tailoring.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1150\" title=\"tailoring\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tailoring-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tailoring-300x243.jpg 300w, http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tailoring.jpg 315w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In August 2012 Joke Ruiters from the Netherlands visited the orphanage for four weeks,\u00a0training staff in tailoring\u00a0and helping staff and children learn how to make shorts, skirts and gym dresses.<\/p>\n<p>The Seventh Day Adventist Makeni Mission District Dorcas Mothers donated items including toiletries, under-garments and cosmetics among others, to St Nicholas Orphanage. Their representative, Mrs Mpikwa,\u00a0encouraged children to use God\u2019s Words to live better lives morally and spiritually.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Nicholas.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1147\" title=\"Nicholas\" src=\"http:\/\/makeni.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Nicholas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"177\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a>We are also very glad to note the progress of Nicholas Tembo, who is now 4 years old. Nicholas arrived at the orphanage as a baby and has now started pre-school at MEC.
