Makeni Ecumenical Centre

Recent Donors

The Zambia Tamil Society
We asked for books and the Zambia Tamil Society responded with a generous donation of very useful titles in technical and development studies areas, brought to us by Mr Narthiya. Thank you for your support!

St John the Baptist, Piddington, UK
We have just received another donation from St John the Baptist for 2005, of £250. Many thanks to the church for their continued interest and support!

Africa AIDS Angels Project, BC, Canada
AAA has recently approved a further donation to the centre of C$5000, another wonderful contribution!

Saanich Community Church, Victoria, BC, Canada
Thank you for your support of St Nicholas' Village in 2005 and 2006! There are photos from the children's bake sale here.

Jan and Truus Veldkamp
Jan and Truus recently funded the improvement of the play park, which they also originally set up. This is a heavily used and much enjoyed facility for all children who spend time at the centre.

In addition, Jan and Truus have purchased a music centre for the orphanage and a television. Together with a donated video recorder the children now have a good range of entertainment facilities. Access is rationed!

The Open University, UK

The Open University in Milton Keynes, England, donated two laptops and three desktop computers to the centre in 2005/2006, and have promised further donations of hardware in the months to come. The laptops will be for staff use, including teaching, and the desktop computers will be used by the computer school to help extend our offering of computer literacy courses. Many thanks to the OU!

Operation Sunshine, UK
We have long struggled to ship items to Zambia from the UK, so the support of Operation Sunshine, based in Folkestone, England, is very valuable to us! Three computers and other items for the Computer School were sent in April, 2006, through their kindness. Chairman of Trustees, Ken Tee, was on hand to receive the items from us for shipment.

Lucas de Geest and family
Elles and Rutger de Geest and baby Lucas have donated € 740 to Makeni Centre. The money was raised when Lucas' parents asked friends to make donations to MEC rather than buy more gifts for Lucas. We are very grateful to the family de Geest for this wonderful gesture. The money will go to St Nicholas Village for AIDS Orphans, where it will be much appreciated both for everyday needs and for bringing some extra fun into the children's lives. Lucas may be our youngest donor so far!

Dorchester team of Churches, England
Adding to recent generous donations from Dorchester, we have the amazing sum of nearly £1100 from three collections at Berinsfield Village Church, St Michael and all Angels at Clifton Hampden and Dorchester Abbey.

Warm thanks also to Warborough, St. Laurence and Clifton Hampden, St. Michael and All Angels, for their kind donation of £201.60, representing the collections at two recent Dorchester Team Council services.

Dorchester congregations have now been supporting the work of MEC for many years, and we are very grateful for this continued vote of confidence. The money is to be split three ways between the Family Planning-HIV/AIDS Prevention Projects, the Agricultural resettlement villages, and the AIDS Orphanage Village of St Nicholas.

Makeni.com
It's always great to welcome new donors. Makeni Ltd is a UK company set up by people who at one time worked in the Makeni area, and they have pledged to provide ongoing support to our work!

Many thanks to the directors and staff of Makeni Limited for their kind donation!

Zambia Interfaith Networking Groups
The HIV/AIDS Project has been given over K24m (US$5000) for conducting educational and sensitisation seminars and worshops in Settlement Villages and other areas from ZINGO (Zambia Interfaith Networking Groups Organisation).

Cheshire Home, Kabulonga, Lusaka
Cheshire Home recently donated blankets to the children at St Nicholas Village. We are especially grateful for this kind of local support!

Klooster Kerk, The Hague, Holland.

Recent donations have enabled the centre to purchase a photocopier for use in the office and for copying teaching materials. The centre has also been able to buy a new computer to replace an old and ailing machine, which will have a new life in the Accounts Department.

A fine gift of money, raised through a church collection at the wedding of a couple of the Klooster Kerk, is being used in the buying of teaching and learning materials for MEC's Adult Education Department.

Project Concern International
PCI continues to supply St Nicholas’ Village with High Energy Protein Supplement, also maize, cooking oil and rice, as a result of which the expenditure for food has gone down considerably and the children's health has improved a lot!

US AID
Recently USAID provided us with a grant of $10,727.30 for HIV/AIDS workshops. This project has now been completed. By way of follow-up we are to send annual evaluation reports for the next three years. USAID has said it is very pleased with the way MEC set up and executed this project.

We thank USAID for supporting this important work!

NGO Co-ordinating Committee, Zambia

We have also received a grant of K80, 734,793 [US$ 17,000] from NGOCC through the Grant Management Unit. About 40% of this will be for the training of community-based VCTC Counsellors, with the remainder for the running of St Nicholas Orphanage Village.
